History of the temple
The Temple of Simon the Canaanite still stands over the place of his burial. Initially, in the 4th century, a small wooden church appeared here, and then, in the 10th century, as the Abkhazian kingdom flourished and Christianity was established, it was replaced by a beautiful white-walled temple.
This is a triapsid cross-dome composition, the central apse is pentagonal, and the side projections are round. This temple can rightfully be considered a masterpiece of church architecture of Abkhazia from the early Middle Ages, the architectural school of the Caucasus, which absorbed Greek (Byzantine) traditions.
Dreadful stories have more than once left their ruinous traces on the walls of this marvelous monument of architecture. This is what happened in the 17th century during the Turkish invasion in Abkhazia. Having mentioned this sum in 1840, our famous spiritual writer, mandrivnik A. N. Muravyov. And according to the knowledge of Archimandrite Leonid (Kavelin), this “treasured shrine of Abkhazia” until the end of the 19th century began to look like “a malovnik ruin.”
Shortly after the construction of the New Athos Monastery in 1875, the pearl of church architecture was transferred from Volodin to the young monastery, and the Chinese immediately began its restoration.
I axis, 10 May 1882 r. renovation of the temple with a new beautiful oak iconostasis was completed at the site of consecration. Church services began, prayer began. New hardships befell the temple under the rule of the Radians.
